Human Torch vs Thing Easter Egg?

I have had an interesting encounter yesterday, I am not entirely sure if it is a bug or not. I used my HT against the war boss which was Thing. I saved the pre-fight ability and activated it on the boss fight but when I hit Thing, regular incinerate debuffs applied instead of nova flames. I first thought I forgot to activate my pre-fight ability but I had 0 persistent charges in the fight and I am sure I did not used it in a prior fight. I am not sure if this is an intended Easter Egg like Daredevil being able to hit invisible opponents or Mags/Juggs avoiding reverse controls, maybe the nova flames from HT does not affect Thing since his nova flames abilities come from the same source that turned them into the F4 and Thing is immune to it. Anyways it was a weird interaction and I wanted to ask if it is a bug or not?

There have been other reports of pre-fight abilities not activating in AW Attack.
