When you start out you are put into a beginners bracket for arenas. I think this last for 2 weeks. So you are with other people who just started out too so it will be easier for you to get the 3* champs and maybe even a 4* champ. After that u are put into a medium bracket for 30 days and after that ur with the rest of us. I would highly take advantage of this as you can grow your roster really fast.
I'd say take your time and develop your Account properly. Get to know as many Champs as you can and Rank each Class. The more you know your Roster, the better the options you'll have for what comes. Balance between all modes of the game.

Focusing on one 4* from each class for my upgrades for now. Waiting on a science champ I like. Currently have Havoc, Crossbones, Stark Spidey, Mephisto and Venom as my top 4*'s.
- get a basic, cheap but helpful mastery setup - if you don't know what to do, get advice before spending iso/units/time and regretting it later. - join an alliance asap, it will help you a lot with your progress - think twice before spending units. Most offers are bad - be patient. you'll get disappointed a lot, especially when waiting for a certain champ. With about 200 champs out there right now, it can take forever until you get who you want.

I don't have enough champs to be usefull in an alliance yet but I have joined one.
I have Parry and Dex mastered. Which ones would you suggest next?

Save your units for more important stuff
my biggest take away is .. "don't get hit" ..
