Hi i just started playing and would like to know what the crystals are all about? I have 4 2*s and opened 2 of those green crystals worth 150 units each and got the same 2*s as i already have? Is that normal for this game?. How many champions are there in this game?

Save your mastery units... do not spend them on anything but mastery cores (you want to get Parry and Dexterity for sure and that is like 500+ mastery cost just to unlock them).
Also yes getting the same 2-star champs is very common and also 2 star champs is mostly (90%) of the time is what you will get from the those crystals. Do not buy those with unit, you will start earning them free pretty fast once you get into the game and start doing daily quests and such. It will take you some time to get your first 3 star but you will get them here and there. It may be a pretty long time before your first 4 star (took me a couple weeks I think of decent play... and some luck) and for 5 stars I have been playing for months and I am not even close to getting one of those yet (and I have spent like $100... I am not proud of that though).
Also never sell champions. Duplicating them gives you more stuff and selling them hurts your rating... there is no good reason to sell them.
