The game experienced a brief connectivity issue this morning. The team promptly fixed the issue and things are back to normal, thank you to everyone who passed along reports!
My alt account will be abandoned for sure. That’s about $1000 per year they’re out now.
I’ll no longer buy unit deals with my primary account either. That’s probably pushing double that.
They just shot themselves in the foot. For business income this is absolutely idiotic.
Removing an event which promoted the highest volumes of fraud and scams across the year, whilst stating they have another replacement for the GGC’s is hardly shooting themselves in the foot..
What you’re going to see is a significant change in alliance behavior/rankings.
People will mothball their alts and lower alliances will begin to have vacancies. Many will fold or merge. Cutoffs for AQ and AW will actually improve because these accounts aren’t padding out the total number of full and/or active alliances.
Alt accounts also usually punch above their weight. Summoners know the champs better and have way more game experience.
You’re going to see groups that would’ve been silver 1 edging into gold 3. Groups that maintain membership and continuity will climb 1-2 rank rewards milestones.
People just need to make a big fuss, and Kabam will postpone for another year. The notice was too short for those who spent the year legitimately grinding on alternate accounts.

Too short.. 3 months in advance... Its not their fault someone tried to take advantage and made multiple mini accounts... I wonder what most of players who did that were thinking... Hmm im gonna make new accounts.. do up to act 4.. i bet they wont notice... And my personal favorite... "Omg lag.. the loading screenn... Game is too slow..!!!" Meanwhile they made 10 accounts and overloaded the databases with lvl 40s with 3k units

The problem here is, not many people want to make a fuss.
Every year the exact same discussion came up. Gifting from alts was not intended, but won't be punished. However, the developers explicitly *refused* to promise this would not change in the future. Thus, it was up to every player to decide whether to bet on next year being the same as this year. N one had the right to demand it to be the case, and everyone who did was supposed to accept the risks of such actions. This was stated every single year. I was one of the people saying it, and it echoed what Kabam had been saying for years.
At some point, people have to take responsibility for their actions and decisions. Now is as good a time as any.

Since they are replacing the GGCs with crystals that contain "a similar caliber of rewards" I think the vast majority of people who were buying tons of crystals and trading them will now just be buying the new crystals for themselves without the need for alts. Since there's now no need to go through trading or alts, it is entirely possible that some of those players will spend more.
I'm not really worried about the players who stop spending out of spite. If they are going to stop spending even though a similar way to receive rewards makes itself available (we haven't yet seen these "similar caliber" crystals, but assumed for the sake of discussion here) then losing those players is a very small price to pay to address what is a multimillion dollar fraud issue. It isn't just about the money. It is about the kind of player we want around here. We want players that understand fraud is something that needs to be tackled for everyone to have a better game, even if there's a price. The ones that only think about themselves and what they want, even in the face of a clearly horrible problem that the vast majority of players seem to have at least some issue with, that encourages actual criminal activity to at least some degree outside the game, and that sours many players experiences with the game, we simply don't need.
From a business perspective, cleaning this up is worth the small loss of revenue that will likely happen. But even if it is not a small loss of revenue. it would still be worth it. Money isn't everything, when you know where and from whom it is coming from.

This to me is just like when old people threaten to take take their business elsewhere and tell their friends about it. While it may seem like they are sticking it to the business in the moment, it’s ultimately meaningless and doesn’t carry the weight they think it does. Your $1000 a year ain’t gunna cripple them.
