Why everyone new update requires 9gb free?

Hi. I have a problem, why everytime when I need to update the game, they say I need like 9 gb free for a approximately 250mb update? It's very troublesome, everytime I need to transfer files from my phone to free space, in the past I needed just like 4gb to update the game. Please fix this issue, this mouth I missed gift days from calendar because of this, also I have a question when I will have a 10 years old account I will get special gifts in the game, just a little bit for me until I will have 10 years old account. Thank you for your time and help. Keep up the good work. Have a good day. Wishing you all the best.

I think this is more a problem of your app store and the phone.

If you read here, it's not actually a problem with my phone or app store: https://forums.playcontestofchampions.com/en/discussion/371295/why-is-mcoc-asking-for-7-51gb-free-space-for-update

It's a problem that Kabam team doesn't want to solve and it's a well known one.

I have Motorola e7 Plus and I update from Google Play, I heard iPhone users doesn't have this problem because iPhone app store works different. What phone do you have? Thank you.

From what I understand the way the game works is it installs the 9 gb before removing the previous update entirely

I don't think so because the update of 250mb it's installed in a few seconds, and before and after that no additional downloads are in notifications, I think they create a backup in case the update goes wrong, and some people uninstall and reinstall the game everytime when they want to update to bypass this issue.

You Essentially have to download the whole game again but only 250mb is installed, then the rest is removed

In that case the backup is absolutely necessary, because this update is likely the worst one all year

What's weird it's no other game ask so much free memory for a small update. In the past was just 4gb required and that was fine.

Hi. Kabam doesn't read my messages, just put the status solved immediately after I write the message and ask them something, also I understood I need to free up to 9 gb for a 250 mb update it's bearable 1 time per month, but now after just few days from the first update I need to update again 15mb and of course again I need to have 9 gb free, so I need to move the files again that occupy my phone memory in order to play, and marvel.com doesn't have support for non Us residents anymore, it's just a big mess I'm just trying to play the game, they forgot to update something and now I need to do the free space procedure all over again. Kabam if you ever read this message I want you to know I'm disappointed by you, I'm a 10 years game player, and I had enough of this, I accepted your 4gb free space requirement but not this. From now on I will uninstall the game and reinstall it again at every update, to bypass this, and I advise you all to do the same, if it's a democracy we shouldn't let anyone to treat us so poorly and without care for our loyalty. Thank you. Have a nice day.

And that doesn't work anymore even if you don't have the app on the phone you still need 9 gb free to install it. So the theory about Kabam needs that space to securely update drops. Which it's even worse.

So for a 1.5 gb app I need 9 gb free, where is the logic? Kabam please fix this or the year 2025 will be the year when I will stop playing your game, after 10 years, no other app force the user have so much free space, why you support just Apple iPhone users and they don't have this issue? It's discrimination.

This is what's happening. They used to overwrite the game a few years ago but changed to basically uninstalling the game and reinstalling the game.

If I understand correctly (I’m not an Android user) his phone reports having 5.3 GB free, but it is asking for 3.61GB to be freed before installing.

This is an Android feature not a Kabam bug. The OS needs room to download the installer, and then it needs room to unpack and run the installer. After install it cleans up the space it used to download and install. To install most apps you pretty much need 2x-3x more space than the app size. You'll find loads of people reporting this problem with many apps on both Android an iOS. My gf runs into this problem a lot on her iPhone.

On a side note: it's curious that the system is recommending a bunch of apps you are currently using as "Apps you might not need."

In general this is true, to different degrees on both iOS and Android. The only thing puzzling to me is that at the moment both iOS and Android claim MCOC takes about 2GB, which makes explaining why any phone would ask for 9GB odd. I can account for a lot with caching, temp files, compressed downloads and the like, but 9GB seems a bit high to me.

The only thing I can think of is some phones don’t really let you use all that storage. Some of it is technically shown as “free space” but the OS nevertheless reserves some of it for certain things, like caching or crash logs or patch versions or whatever. It has been a while since I’ve burned by storage down to zero on my phone, but my old Apple Watch used to have that problem. I had what appeared to be enough storage, but I couldn’t update a lot of things due to the need for storage above and beyond. So it is possible a phone might report having 5 GB but still ask for 4 GB because when it tries to allocate that storage the OS basically said no.

It isn’t the need that is odd, it is more the magnitude that is a little odd to me. If it asked for 6, I would have just wrote it off. 9 seems high at a glance to me. Maybe it is a combination of needing a reasonable multiple and storage reservations.

Apple definitely doesn’t need 9gb. Not even half that.

Because I am definitely underneath that currently, and can do monthly updates still.

I wonder, if after the installer starts running maybe it is downloading additional resources as part of the installation.

Possible, but I would guess the amount it downloads for Android is likely to be at least similar to iOS, and both app stores state about 2 GB, and after uninstalling and reinstalling on iOS mine shows about 2 GB of usage.

As you can see I have 5.3gb free on my phone and I need additional 3.61gb so I can install the game, Google Play asking me for that, so 5.3 + 3.61 it's almost 9gb, I uploaded the game before and I know this is how much free space I need.

No, I don't get in the notifications bar any additional installation, I use to get but in the past.

This is on my other phone with Android 13, I see in this version they just show me the total amount of how much I need free memory, I don't need to calculate anymore, on my tablet it's the same, this is not a device problem, can be a Google Play problem.
