Game balance hypocrisy

I wanted to break this comment off from the Spiderwoman balance post to make it a more visible discussion.

The change to Spiderwoman under the guise of being beneficial to us is a very hypocritical and unnecessary change.

Kabam has created a very difficult challenge for themselves, which they are not handling well.

Any change Kabam makes to any champion for any reason now has to go through the filter of Bullseye, Enchantress, Serpent, and Dark Phoenix. Since those champions are allowed to exist as they are, Kabam needs to have a DAMN good reason for changing any other champ in a negative way.

Kabam, you have created minibosses wrapped up in a champion skin and let them run loose and wreck people's enjoyment of this game for way too long. Any change that even slightly nerf or tunes down a champion's ability that isn't one of those 4 will immediately be met with scrutiny and negative backlash, and you have to know this.

To add on. If Kabam can't only take the ability away on defense (which we know they can), then move her defense rating from 3.5 to 4 in your Excel sheet and keep her as is. You'll get a lot less backlash that way.

I get what you're saying.

But I don't think that the fact Kabam chose to not tune down their top defenders means that they shouldn't tune down defenders who were better than expected.

We don't want all the defenders to be 5/5, any more than we actually want them all to be 2/5, because that would be boring.

So I have no problem with them making her easier on defence.

I totally agree that only making the change happen on defence would be a far better option, though. Reducing her offensive value under the guise of reducing her defensive value is just disingenuous.

Similar to A LOT of Kabam decisions lately, this change just seems unnecessary. From my quick glimpse into the discord, apparently many in high tier war & celestial BGs have been asking for this change. Being that those are the bread & butter for Kabam, seems as this might have been outside influenced. It's all speculation, but at this point, who the F knows with Kabam…

Maybe high-tier war and celestial BG players shouldn't dictate how the game functions for everyone. Just saying.
Also, it feels weird to say, considering their status in-game but they need to get good if this was something that was a big issue for them. It just sounds like they aren't taking the time to understand how the ability works and instead of working around it like every other ability in the game are just crying to remove it.

I have never been one to shout RANK DOWN TICKETS but I think we gone need RANK DOWN TICKETS for this one. Nobody asked for this nerf. It wasn't needed!! I'm really disappointed with this one Kabam.

So hard to leave out all things I want to say lol. Keeping it simple, nobody asked for this. SW’s ensnare is one of the things that make her so good offensively and why so many of us have ranked her up. Personally I think it’s fine defensively as well, but if they wanted to take it away on defense alone, fine… taking it away on offense is basically kicking the community in the teeth and saying “you’re welcome”

Classic Kabam move! Heaven forbid we get through a single week without them letting 💩 hit the fan. Serpent? Totally fine. Enchantress? Perfectly balanced. But Spider-Woman? Oh sure, let’s gut her with a defensive nerf that also screws her offense.

Because why bother with a simple tweak - like dialing down her ensnare % - when you can nuke it out of existence? Naturally, Kabam can’t stand the thought of players actually enjoying playing the game! 🤦‍♂️

I don’t even know what to say. I’m extremely frustrated about this on several levels.

The framing of how this is “not an offensive nerf” because “we haven’t seen spider-woman need a solution to evade across her matchup spread.” You must be joking. The evade counter is great if a node creeps into her matchup spread that causes evade. It allows her to land her power stings even in these matchups. If this truly wasn’t an offensive nerf, you would have only made this go into effect ON DEFENSE. You can make this a thing!! Why are we robbing a champ of her utility ON OFFENSE AND DEFENSE IF THIS IS A DEFENSIVE NERF!!? If we are going about this chain of thought, why not remove Thanos’s panic debuff on defense and offense? Cause Zola and red skull don’t have evade or miss? Nothing about this change is adding up in any kind of logical way except you randomly selected a new champ that was powerful and robbed her of part of her kit
Really? This is the champ receiving a nerf? Not serpent? Or enchantress? Or onslaught? This is where we draw the line? Spiderwoman with these changes will still be taken by the same counters she had before. This is an absolute asinine decision
If you really wanted to make a defensive nerf, remove her fumble debuff, not something that has uses on attack too.

I’m so over this decision-making. I invested all of these materials into a character, and now the team is nerfing her. I’m not spending a dime on this game anymore or until they make massive swings in the other direction. Cause right now? The game feels awful, and every facet is getting worse over time and not better

As is the case 9/10 times with Kabam drama, the biggest issue is with communication / delivery. They write a paragraph explaining how great she is offensively but that they won't be changing her offensively. Then in the next paragraph they say they are removing an effect that I would say is 50/50 offensive and defensive and try to convince us that it won't effect her offensively.

I would have no problem if they just said, she's a 10/10 offensively so we feel comfortable nerfing one tiny offensive aspect to make her a 9.5/10 offensively. Them trying to convince us it will have no effect is far more frustrating than just saying they are nerfing her a tiny bit.

And all that is on top of them (for some unexplainable reason) just gaslighting us into thinking they can't remove it on defense only. I seriously don't even mind the actual change they plan to make. JUST BE STRAIGHT FOWARD AND HONEST WITH YOUR COMMUNICATION!!!

it’s not about the change

it was random chance to fail abilities ( I for one don’t like those hence I don’t use the pacify or assassin masteries )

just about how they are presenting it to the players

if they just said : she’s too good on attack and so we are nerfing her

instead of saying : she’s too good on defense that’s why we are taking this thing off her ( and in small print this will make her worse on attack as well )

there would have been backlash but not as much

if they still wanna go ahead then just give her some other way to counter evade

What probably happened behind the scenes was…

Kabam employee #1: "Hey Spiderwoman is one heck of a defender, in the balance let's reduce that. I really think this will help get the players back on our side!"

Kabam employee #2: "This is a great idea, imagine them all having a nuke and now being able to take her down as a defender… they're going to love us. Is there anything we're missing before we go through with this?"

Kabam employee #1: "I've looked at this from every angle, it's a huge win. The whole community will sing our praises."
