Battlegrounds is fine the way it is. And I say that as someone who isn’t good enough or doesn’t have a big enough account to make it to GC. As soon as you start tailoring matchmaking you have to start tailoring the rewards and the current rewards are just fine.
It’s as true a way as any of finding out just how good you are as a player and how good your roster is. If you and/or your roster aren’t good enough to make it past diamond or platinum or wherever you are the onus is on you to improve, not make the competition easier.
Battlegrounds is not fine the way it is. If it was truly a competitive mode then everyone would get a chance to reach the top. That means that we would all have a roster full of 7r4s or max 6 stars or 5 stars etc. The way it is now it only favors whales and the 0.5% of extremely good players in the game. So no Battlegrounds isn't fine, it needs fixing ASAP.
The problem with what BG have become are a combination of problem, and set same size accounts against each other is not a solution, this come from a relatively mid account.
Here are a list of issue:-
Problem 1 - OP Defender that need specific Hard counter.
Before BG really kick off, there wasn't many OP Def that need hard counters, there was very good counter, but the fight can be done with less perfect counter just require more skills, like Korg, Thing or even Photon.
But the newage Def like Serpent, Dark Phoenix, Bulleye, Yelana, Enchantress and her AI & RNG.
High Evolution is a perfect example, oh you need to do this, oh but what use to work doesn't work anymore you need something else, new which we sell to you soon.
These are bad design, we understand why it is done and maybe some is need as the game evolving and new elements need to be added but it is poorly executed.
This result in BG match become heavy depending on roster and draft luck, and less in skill. If you don't get the right counter it is a automatic lost.
Problem 2 - Exclusive Champ & Sales Event
We have seen a shock increase on the amount of Sales Event, each contribute to the wider gap between big spend, casual spender, small spender and ftp. It create a eco which bigger gap in between trying to cohabit in the similar space.
Add to this the number of exclusive champs that are extremely OP either on Def and Attack make the gap even more wide.
The gap between a big spender, that would get all of the new released champs and exclusive to and casual spend is massive, this why we have seen in recently endgame and high skill players leaving.
Problem 3 - Engagement
All of the above lead to players being less engaged, and many said on this forum, they just not play in the first few week and jump near the end and make their way through to GC. While this make perfect sense, it so cause the back log where smaller accounts still face massive accounts in wk3 or 4 in VT.
Solution
Of course I don't have all the solution to this massive problem, otherwise Kabam would hire me lol.
However, I do think the key to improve BG is a health flow of engagement. If players are encouraged and key here, ENJOY playing BG, they are engaged and play regularly then all will naturally progress through the track, this would lead to more appropriate match up, those are at the certain level is either because of roster or skill. Strong players and/or big roster will more up and smaller or casual players will match against each other.
This might be achievable by:-
For example within a match, I'mjust putting rough number in, just to give an idead:-
Fight 1 - Win the fight, 5 points for winning the fight, 5 point for KO Def, 5 point for 100% health, 5 points for fight in 30 seconds. Total point for Fight 1 = 20 points
Fight 2 - Lose the fight, 5 for KO Def, 2 for 50% health, 1 poing for 60 seconds. Total point for Fight 2 = 8 points
Fight 3 - Lost the fight, 2 points for 50% health. Total point for Fight 3 = 2 points.
Lost the match, got 30 points (winner would have a lot more point)
Point are add, not reduce. To focus is to get as much point as possible for every fight not just winning the match, you still get rewards (with points) for getting a good fight even if you lose the match.
This a very rough idea in the morning without coffee, sure there are issue here but it could be base to work from.
What are your thought on how to improve players engagement and BG eco?
Name me any competition in any sphere where there are no inherent advantages or disadvantages. In any any open competition there are commercial advantages, financial advantages, genetic advantages, age demographic advantages, practice time advantages, natural ability advantages, geographic advantages, and any number of others.
What people and the OP actually mean in this scenario is ‘please take away the elements which disadvantage me personally’. If you’re going to get rid of roster/financial advantages can we please split into age groups as well so I don’t have to compete against people who are younger and quicker on the draw than me. And while you’re at it we should split it between male/female/non-binary as well in case there are any unfair genetic advantages to be had there.
Of course that’s all nonsense. An open competition is just that. Open to all, uncategorised and unfiltered. It has never been sold as being anything other than that.
None of this is seen as a problem to Kabam. They sell more in the current version. Leveling the playing field and making the mode pure skill/strategy based will almost definitely lower their monetization efforts.
One could argue that more players enjoying the mode would increase participation, which would increase overall activity and morale and thus increase spending and profit, but I doubt they have statistics for this. It'd be considered a theory or wishful thinking and not worth the risk to the bottom line, so I wouldn't expect a change anytime soon.
It's similar to companies who don't seem to value positive word of mouth advertising enough to pursue world class customer service. It takes a lot to achieve and it can be incredibly valuable, but it's a hard sell to most suits. Easier to go used car sales mode and get the quick buck.
Thats my assumption, anyway.
Hard to improve your wallet in comparison to somebody that's rich and has the disposable income to throw at a game. Bg's isn't as much about skill as it is about money now. Skill will only get you so far.
Yep I fully agreed with you that current that is Kabam business strategy to increase cashflow and I expect that this is not going to chance unless the revenue decrease and show sign the strategy no longer working.
Hence why in my solution it doesn't focus on change what Kabam is currently doing, but focus on creating a better natural flow in the players progress by
As far as Kabam revenue strategy, we don't have any data for this year turn over, I think that is normally access sometime in the new year. However we have seen players sentiment at all time low, and a number of players who use to be spender have slow down or stop, as they feel Kabam current strategy is not working for them.
The loyal MCoC players invest their time and hard earned money to Kabm because of 3 things, enjoyment, nostalgia to the IP and addiction.
So Kabam could really take the time to reevaluate the current state of MCoC, as it is not healthy.
Ironically, Spider Woman as she is is actually a perfect example how champion should be design and would bring a lot to the health of MCoC and the community.
She have to mixed set of abilities that enable her to have the "potential" to counter a wide range of Def. This is a GOOD thing for Kabam, MCoC and the community.
So again it worth Kabam review this Spider Woman situation, they might be destroy the one good thing that could help everyone. In Spider Woman we trust 🤣
I don't think you understand what competitive
They literally tried the matchmaking you're suggesting and all it led to was lower tier players getting easier matches and coasting through to gc while high end players were stuck facing tougher opponents. It actively punished developing your roster and ranking characters which is the last thing they want to do since it's not only the point of the game, but it also means that the more you rank your characters the harder bgs became.
If this concept was so good it would have worked but it didn't
First of all being young is no longer an advantage, saying this as a young person, it makes you more reckless and likely to go for intercepts, stand-ups, etc. Which is obviously not going to work often with today’s ai. As a result I play in a way older and slower players such as yourself could play, parry at the start, combo, bait heavies without blocked hits or parry, then sidestep where possible eliminating any intercept risk unless I’m sure it’s guaranteed.
Second, it does not personally disadvantage me much, I am a free to play valiant with six rank fours and can do two or three more after act 9.3 and Wheel of fate. So I have a decent amount of rank 4s including deathless Thanos and because I have played the game and am better than most, if not all of the whales I tend to match, skill wise, I can still get some wins despite the disparity in rosters. Regardless it is annoying to have to constantly be on A-game just to win and it becomes exhausting, so imagine how it feels for smaller accounts, that belong to more inexperienced, less skilled players.
Lastly, whilst at the competition there may be inherent advantages and disadvantages, but are there not competing classes in those competitions to purposely eliminate any advantages they can in advance, and to allow for the smaller people, the lesser teams, the less skilled gamers to also have a shot at winning and progressing before they reach the brackets they aspire for. In sports there are leagues, weightlifting there are weight classes, games roster based matchmaking. There is always an element of fairness in an otherwise biased competition. In the game of Mcoc the bias should fall to who you’ve ranked up and how you use them, not how many rank ups.
The matchmaking I've suggested would be to have a set roster with the same champs and ranks for EVERYONE, each season or variation (node changes). I don't recall them ever doing this, but I could be wrong.
The problem is that it doesn't require rank-ups to get an advantage, thus no need to spend money on BGs.
