I've thought about this too but I think it comes with its own host of issues.
(1) BGs already rewards people who play 16 hours a day during every day of the season, people like Beroman and Steeler and others. Yes, they risk losing points by playing, but basically they play so much that they can both fine tune their strategies for the meta and play through losing streaks until they get those big winning streaks to pull ahead.
It's funny when I watch a stream and some C4 or C5 player gets beat by a Mysterium or Quantum player and they're shocked because they assume if you're in those lower brackets it's because you lack skill. They never realize that some people are in those tiers because they just have lives and not because they lack skill.
Anyway, the point being, BGs already rewards players who play nonstop; getting rid of losing points will only exacerbate this and widen the gap between the no-lifers and the casuals.
(2) You're going to see a lot of forfeits and shady tactics. If you can lose a match to your friend and not hurt yourself in the process, this will completely ruin the competitive integrity of BGs, or whatever is left of it anyway. People have already accused some top players of doing this, so imagine if you have a scenario where it becomes even easier/more incentivized to forfeit on purpose.
(3) If anything, win-loss record is a better guage of skill than total raw points. Because you can have a player who finishes a season with say a 25-2 record in GC, and then someone with a 80-50 record will finish higher than them despite clearly being a weaker player. So to take away points for losing will just make the mediocre grinders do even better.
Going on a win streak only to have it ruined by a modder is a huge problem also.
maybe everybody is too busy having fun in adaptive EQ 😀.
i think if I force myself I could be a littler higher in gladiator circuit, but (I feel) it doesn’t compensate the time effort… I only play BG until Gladiator circuit because of the chase for the final rewards… the founders thing
A lot of people are feeling this, I'm sure.
The thing is that defender designs are just absolute bs recently, you only have a few counters(or less) or you just are screwed.
There was a time they designed hard but "fair" defenders, Thing, Korg, Sasquatch, Killmonger, Mordo,.. to name a few, but they went totally overboard in the last few years.
And then now that Kabam has let defenders like Serpent/Enchantress exist, when you get "fair" defenders like High Evolutionary, competitive BG players complain that he's not a PTW champ that they can buy to instantly win a round.
And so if Kabam is refocusing its business model on getting BG players to buy and chase the meta, invariably we'll get more BS defenders/counters because thats where they want to make their money.
The question is how do Kabam fix this, years of Overtuned Def (or as Kabam say well Balanced) .
I thought Spider Woman was actually a champion designed in the right direction. She is versatile and can take a number of matches, not guaranteed, not hard counter, but possible.
We need more of those type of champions. But it is clear that is what Kabam thing and so gone with Spider Woman's Ensnare 😔.
So where do we go from here?
Most competitive BG players don't even view Enchantress as a good defender anymore outside of crazy power gain metas.
While I could joke that almost every meta is a power gain meta, I will say that this kind of highlights how Kabam has moved to a "disposable" model. Barely any work is put into creating interesting node combinations to make things more/less difficult; rather the focus is on creating a disposable champion that players will buy for 3-6 months before dropping that to buy the next disposable champion.
Financially it makes sense - there is no money to be made off of Korg, more money can be made by creating defender/counters than by putting effort into designing season nodes that allow a wide range of champions to be strategized around.
Yeah people hate on the idea that BGs seasons should have a set roster because they don't want to face the same champs over and over but that's literally what happens in regular BGs. I've never faced a player that didn't have at least a serpent, enchantress or bullseye. Everyone ranks up the same champs, BGs is so trash man
I'm just saying, champs like Enchantress are fair defenders because you can use any attacker and get a good score against her if you do the fight well.
The defenders that BG players think are unfair are the unavoidable damage ones where you basically cannot get a good score unless you have one of a limited number of counters.
So champs like Serpent because of the unavoidable block damage, Dark Phoenix and Captain Brittain because of the unavoidable nova flames/neuroshocks.
So like when someone mentions Enchantress as one of the unfair defenders that kinda shows that their issue with BGs is not just unfairness, but also difficulty, which is a separate discussion.
And I'm not saying just plain difficulty is not a worthwhile discussion, but it is a different discussion from unfairness/unavoidable damage.
