Champion Attributes (Pts)

How do you read Champion attribute points? For example. Take YellowJacket. He has extremely high energy resistance, +5016 “Pts” at 6*r3.

But what does that mean? Is that a 30% reduction? 50%? 80%? 50.16%? Take a sig 200 mordo. Its around 13,000 energy resistance “points” but again? What does that mean, at the end of the day you can only reduce a number by up to 100%.

So is 5000 in comparison small? And is 13000 massive? What am I, the player, supposed to do with that information if its not a ratio/percentage, or if it varies by champion?

I mean this applies for masteries as well, take cruelty and precision. Those are points. What is 425 points? For example, if 7* stat focus lists, say 500pts as a 20% physical resistance reduction. What is 5000 points? Well, its certainly not 200%.

So either some sort of diminishing return stacking is occurring like debuffs and buffs, or like idk

Flat stats use a slightly complex math formula that is designed to constrain the effective strength of those attributes between zero and 100%. They do that by using this formula:

Attribute Value = FlatStat / (FlatStat + 1500 + CR*5).

Let's simplify this a bit, and assume for now that CR=100. CR represents the challenge rating of your opponent (not your own). If we make that assumption for now, we get:

Attribute Value = FlatStat / (FlatStat + 2000).

What does that mean? Well, when the Stat = 2000, this becomes 2000 / (2000 + 2000) = 1/2 = 50%. When Stat =4000 this becomes 4000 / (4000 + 2000) = 4 / 6 = 67%. When Stat = 6000 then the formula spits out 3/4 = 75%.

So as the stats increase by 2000, the value increases from 1/2 to 2/3 to 3/4 to 4/5 etc. It gets closer and closer to 100%, but can never reach it. It just gets closer as the value goes up. That's the idea behind the flat stat system.

So let's take your Mordo with 13000 resistance. IF your Mordo fights something with 100 challenge rating, then that resistance is 13000 / (13000 + 2000) = 13000/15000 ~= 87%. If you fight something with 200 challenge rating, then that resistance becomes 13000 / (13000 + 1500 + 5*200) = 13000 / 15500 ~= 84%.

As your opponent's challenge rating goes up, your own stats in that fight go down (and vice versa, the higher your challenge rating the lower your opponent's become). But the effect is small: if you're trying to guesstimate values, it is reasonable to estimate using CR=100 and you'll generally get within a couple percentage points of the true value. So for example, in your post you ask what is 425? Here's what I would do in my head to estimate. 425 is about 400. 400 is 1/5th of 2000. So 400 / (400+2000) is going to be about 1/6. That is about 17%. 500 is 1/4th of 2000, so 500/(500+2000) is going to be about 1/5, or 20%. 425 has to be between 17% and 20% for CR=100. 425 is closer to 400 than 500, so the actual value is going to be closer to 17% the 20%, so its going to be about 18%. In actuality, it is 425/(425+2000) = 425/2425 = 17.5%.
