What’s your thoughts on the state of BG’s as is? Here’s mine, coming from a washed up has been.

Hello everyone, some of you may remember me and some may not.
Regardless, I will introduce myself officially.
My IGN is I-SO Broke, you may have seen me in BG’s before as I’ve played the mode for a long long time- and very consistently for a while at that.
Basically since the modes release, I’ve had my up’s and down’s with the metas, mastery setups,
(Deep wounds meta *shudders*) points requirement for my ally’s I was in, matchmaking, etc etc.. and sometimes (mistakenly) would come here to make a post that was well… rough around the edges to say the least.
Anyways, with that being said- here’s my
thoughts.

40 champions in the deck at once in theory is fantastic, allows for more champ usability and actual fun and diverse rosters. In practicality? You’re still gonna see the same 3-4 meta defenders and most node relevant nuke attackers. Every. Single. Match.
Not to say I blame them at all, of course you’re gonna do everything you can to win- in a competitive mode. I do the same.
However…

The game feels stale, as someone I’ve always respected as a fellow BG’s player said

The game design, direction it’s headed, and champion design really just takes the soul out of the mode. Granted, I am no longer in the upper echelons of BG rankings anymore- because frankly I don’t care to push for it, but for those who do; I can only imagine how burnt out they must feel.

TL;DR- The game feels soulless now, and as a direct reflection of that so does BG’s. May also think about taking another break again here soon.
What’s your thoughts on BG’s as a whole right now? I want to hear what you all have to say.

I just do it for the radiance and trophy tokens, and because there is nothing else to do in the game atm.

it is getting tired to always see the same champs and use the same champs.

BG is basically "do you know how to fight these exact 20 meta defenders? and do you know how to use these 20 meta attackers? yes? okay, you win . no? okay, you lose.

That’s honestly a perfect way to put it, I just lost my last match because my opponent (someone I recognized from playing in high tier matches when I wasn’t so washed) relied on the fact that I couldn’t reliably full dex spider woman’s SP1.
They were correct and I lost the nuke off.
Ah well, probably time for bed for me anyways. Lol

when i came back to the game a few months ago after a 2 years break.. man it was brutal

i didn't know how to fight any of these champs, i died to yelenas, onslaughts, zolas, spiderwoman.. all of them..

they are ridiculously difficult to fight comparing to defenders from a few years ago, so don't be too hard on yourself.

I think it’s about coming to terms with the fact that most of us are amateurs in what’s becoming a professional game.

It requires hours of proper practice in the same way that playing a musical instrument requires the same level of dedication.

Most people with jobs and families might have time for 1 or 2 fairly serious hobbies. If this isn’t one of those you just aren’t going to be competing at the highest level.

Full time you tubers don’t help in setting unrealistic expectations of where most people should be. Not intentionally I hasten to add, but it’s easy to look at what they do and beat ourselves up because we can’t. What we aren’t seeing is the hours of playing time that goes in that many of us just don’t have.

BG is the reason defenders got more difficult, its the skill creep from the most competitive players, Kabam had to make defenders harder because top players were just too good.

however this affected everyone, especially casual players which make at least 90% of players.

no one likes reading 3 books of abilities and practicing every Special attack of every defender, like its some kind of exam.

Straight up, having to learn how to fully dex Yelena’s SP1 and SP2 during the pierce meta- damn near broke me inside.
I didn’t even try to learn how to fight that mystic defender everyone runs, I just ban her every single match. I’m not reading that essay lmao

I understand the frustration, there haven’t been a ton of changes to the mode since its launch and most new champs from last year ended up being overpowered in BGs. I used to rank up the meta champs when BGs first started, but nowadays I can’t really bother with it. At this point I just rank up whoever I want, whether they’re great for bgs or not, and do the best I can. It honestly makes the mode more fun as there’s plenty of interactions I never thought would be possible (such as namor against high evo). And then in doing so, the matches in turn feel less repetitive.

Just to explain sort of what I'm talking about in case some people didn't fully get it. J J Jameson has a decent kit, which on paper is designed to tackle the main challenges modern meta mutant defenders pose, however what he lacks is damage and this kills a lot of that value because champs like Jack Bastion Maker Solvarch are faster and therefore capable of achieving better results against the same exact defenders with maybe one or two exceptions. I'm not saying he should've been a nuke, not at all what I'm saying, but why not just give him some extra indefinite armor ups at the start of a BGs match to give him more damage as a result? Giving him more damage so he can actually be interchangeable with the other techs I mentioned isn't going to kill the game mode or break the balance, it's how you prevent the game mode from feeling stale and hollow because everyone continues to use the same 4-5 techs every single match.

A 40 deck change isn't just going to magically shake up the meta when the usual suspects are still the usual suspects. If I was running Maker Jack Bastion Solvarch before I'm not going to stop running Maker Jack Bastion Solvarch just because they added ten more spots to the deck. I might choose to add J J to my deck because I have to but 9 times out of 10 you won't catch me picking him over any of the other four I mentioned purely because of the damage and speed situation. In other words, if champ design doesn't change and they don't start making it so the usual suspects are interchangeable with other champs then a 40 deck change is going to have zero effect on the meta whatsoever IF you play competitively at least. Why on Earth would I handicap myself using J J when there are better options who can get me better results in a game mode when I'm trying to stay competitive? And sure you could make the argument that "not everyone is competitive" but is there any harm being done to casual BGs players by designing more champs that are interchangeable with the usual suspects? Absolutely not, no harm is being done to that demographic because the niche champ they like to use is now actually effective and more likely to get them wins.

Dr. Strange and Pav are perfect examples of what I'm talking about. Strange can replace your Kushala against Serpent and achieve same or better results. Similarly, Pav can replace your Nico against someone like Dark Phoenix and also get a score just as good as hers + he can handle Serpent too. This is what we need more of, we don't need more champs like J J and Lizard who were almost really good but a couple of things in their kits just prevented them almost completely from getting up there fully. They're obviously fully capable because they have been doing it to a certain extent, they just choose not to do it as often aw I think they , God knows why.

Also the fact that JJJ is metal, has instainstant shocks and relies on miss for damage. Not going to help much in countering Cap Britain or Onslaught

Also to add to the last part where I mention Strange, Nico and Pav. I'm sure some will be thinking "well if they continue to design attackers like that then Serpent and Dark Phoenix will eventually fall off and lose value just like Korg did" and that's a valid concern. However, the game has evolved so much since 2018 and we have so many new mechanics that it would be just as easy to create defenders Pav, Nico, Strange etc can't take/have a really hard time taking. Prime example, Heimdall who's joining the Titan soon and will be 100% immune to Nico's shenanigans it will literally be an instant loss, Hulkling already makes using Pav a little stressful (can't parry have to intercept only) and he gets slowed down quite a bit (can't power steal), Dark Phoenix shuts down Dr Strange pretty hard neutralizing her immortality just makes it trigger as a passive and you take all the nova flame damage. Anyways, the whole point is there are ways, I really hope they get their **** together soon.
