Repeatedly screwed on the edge of tier 1

For the last two seasons, everytime we’ve gotten close to tier 1 (current rating 3619) we matched up with someone waaaay higher than us (current opponent 3711). We get placed on the tier one map against a tier one opponent. Our win rate plummets. And we don’t even get the tier 1 multiplier for playing on the tier 1 map.

This is especially notable given where the war cutoff is between p2 and p3. We have a 4-1 record averaging 23-24 deaths per war in tier 2.

We’re inside p2, but barely. A loss, especially one where more deaths are likely, almost certainly knocks us out of platinum 2 and drops us farther from tier 1.

How is this the matchup we get? This has happened about 5 times in 1.5 seasons.

Honestly, a decent strategy might be having a person or 2 wait out the war to see how many times they can die and still win, and dying that many times so that yall don't get too high on the leaderboard too quick. And on wars you're going to lose, you can also die a lot more so that your next matchup will be easier.

At the end of the day, what is going to largely determine where you place is your tier. So if you can get tier 1, by war rating farming and matching less good allies than you would if you tried your best. Even with those lost points from extra deaths, you would end P2 and have the advantage of being able to choose your bans, etc.

I believe some of OP's other posts went much further in detail about their matchups, how War Rating seemed very mismatched in very many of them, on the edge of that Tier.

so was far more than just this one. And it did seem like something was off, for some time, with them.

you are correct that this isn’t the first time I’ve brought it up.

You should be getting matched with teams in your range…say plus or minus 25 points. Why are we getting someone nearly a hundred above us? There have to be a dozen alliances between us.

the bigger issue is this: if you’re going to give us the honor of playing on a tier one map, WE DESERVE THE MULTIPLIER.

"There have to be a dozen alliances between us." This is something you should look at and document, not assume. Just because their war rating is much higher than yours does not mean they are wildly ahead of you. And if they are close enough to match you when they're in tier 1 and you're in tier 2, then that means they are possibly dying A LOT or not exploring.

You have to understand if they matched alliances based on war rating instead of season points, things would be very different, especially at the absolute top and not in a good way.

getting the higher Tier multiplier (not the one you are in, but the one you are fighting on), no.

Imagine the team right next to you in standing (and maybe similar WR), fighting in what is your normal tier, only getting your tiers normal multiplier, while you fighting one tier up got a higher (which way up there is WAY higher) multiplier, and shooting well beyond the team who you had been right next to. Even with a LOSS (multiplied points from just explore, diversity, etc, regardless of not getting win bonus), you would shoot well higher than your neighboring teams.

But at least (I think), the +/- WR movement for losing against a team higher (much higher WR) should be a lot less damage to your WR # (and similarly, your higher opponent I believe is gonna be getting LESS of a WR bump), that normal if each of you had been matched against someone closer to your WR. And alternatively, if you actually win, it should be giving you a bigger bump in WR change for that war, versus normal even matchups. *if your WR +/- potential on those lopsided wars is NOT similarly lopsided, that could be something to look at too.

The valid issue though is why the big disparity in WR that you have been matching against over so many wars.

I'm not 100% sure how matchmaking is calculated. But what I do know from my experience leading a tier 1 ally is that your place on the leaderboard is strongly correlated with who you match. And war rating is seemingly not correlated. And if you don't already know, your place on the leaderboard is determined by your season points (deaths, defender diversity, and exploration) multiplied by your tier multiplier. And that big tier multiplier leads to most alliances in the same tier being close to each other on the leaderboard, aside from tier 1 and some of the really low tiers.

There are a lot of wars where you match the alliance directly in front of you or behind you on the leaderboard. And most other wars, the alliance you match is pretty close, like within 10 places of you.

Another thing that backs this up is at the beginning of an alliance war season in tier 1, when there is no leaderboard, a p2 tier 1 ally could end up matching a masters tier 1 ally with 500 more war rating than them. So if war rating itself was a large contributing factor to matchmaking, then these infamous beginning of the season tier 1 deathmatches wouldn't be happening.

However, these tier 1 deathmatches do not happen when you're not in tier 1. The first war of the season you'll get matched against an ally in the same tier (correct me if I'm wrong). So I do believe tier does have a role in matchmaking, at least at the beginning of the season. War rating itself, likely does not.

Update: we did beat tier 1. We got 40 rating points. We are still in tier 2. We still didn’t get a t1 multiplier.

if you are matching an alliance with a way higher rating and losing your rating is plummeting, you take a minimal hit while if you do win you benefit greatly. My former alliance had several seasons in your shoes before breaking through and holding t1 consistently for seasons. The bigger issue is that you play t1 map for t2 points. That part needs to be addressed but matchmaking wise it’s just how it goes sometimes it feels like it happens to you more.
