Did we ever figure out why we aren't able to select which rank up gem we want to use on a champ?

For example, I have a 5* Shulk. She's at r3. On the upgrade screen the option to use my science 3-4 (not year specific) is the only listed option. Yet I have 2017 generic gems in the overflow and can see no way to choose to use them even though they are totally applicable. There is obviously a design issue here? What's the solution?

    Submit a ticket and they will fix it. I think that’s all you can do
