Proving ground issues

I noticed when I’m playing proving ground for my t1-3 basic or class cats that if I go and check out my champs to see what I need to upgrade them then play the proving ground I don’t receive anything that I need and I only get fragments thru 100% exploration but if I don’t check out my champs before playing I get catalyst. What’s up with this? I went three weeks trying to get what I needed for one champ to rank up and every week I look at the champ to see what I needed, played 100% and gotten fragments but yet when I don’t check out my champs and just randomly play proving grounds I’ll get like 4 t3cc.
