I've been saving my units for a new mastery and have always been curious about willpower but don't know too much about it to spend the 1,100 units on it
I agree it has value in act 4. Before it got reduced in version 12.0, I kept three points in Willpower at all times.
Now I still keep one point in it - it's nice to get that bit of healing when you pick up a debuff; although it's not enough to offset most Damage Over Time debuff.
So I'd suggest one point at most; but it's not a necessity. It helps a lot in Act 4 where there are regular unavoidable debuffs that can last the entire length of the fight; as the healing does become significant if it goes on that long.
I run full suicides, so willpower is worth it for me. Got it maxed along with recovery and the one to reduce bleed damage so I take basically no damage from LC+DE, and gain a decent amount with other random debuffs.
I've had Willpower for the longest time (at 1/3). It felt nice to have. And while it can be good in act 4, it wasn't as helpful in act 5 (or any other part of the game really).
It was actually detrimental in act 5 because there are paths that have a reverse healing for every debuff you suffer, and the node itself places a debuff on you (Spectre). So with that debuff, your willpower triggers, and it gets reversed. Meaning that entire path basically just becomes a degeneration path. And that node/path actually comes back several times in different chapters.
I've since then 100% act 5 and have taken willpower off and it gave me quite a lot of mastery points to put in more offensive masteries.
tl:dr. Willpower rarely triggers and hardly matters if you're not running suicide masteries. So no, it's not very good imo.
They are still great, especially in wars. Check out this fight and judge by yourself:

1 fight... all the other fights he got nothing from it lol. Mastery points are valuable, there are a lot of better masteries to get that will work in every fight.
Unless you are running suicides I'd say no but just my opinion. If you want it without suicides 1 point is usually enough. I ran it for a long time when I was newer but haven't used it in a long time. To me putting points in utility and attack is a better use of points.
Depends on your skill level. If you get hit by specials that cause debuffs a lot it's worth it. Otherwise, act 4 is pretty much the only place it's really worth getting.
Only Max WP if you run suicides. Otherwise, it's a personal choice whether to not run WP (as I have done for months) or to run 1 in WP (as I have done for months too). BTW, you can run 1 in WP and still need DW, MD, and Assasin. WP does give a very good PI boost for arenas too and so there is that as well.

All those random debuff can really add up.
Otherwise it's a waste, better to work towards mystic dispersion or something like that.

That requirement should've been removed when WP was nerfed.
