Best to put only 1 point in recoil unless your using awakened magik. Because the recoil damage kills you quicker or keep using sp3 to avoid the recoil damage.

Could just use Hyperion and spam sp3 massive damage

Recoil is mostly a means to an end. It makes your war defenders bad, and it limits the specials you can use. You can't unlock suicides without it, so if you are going to run suicides you need recoil. But I would never just have recoil.
