Does it change if you level up your champ after being placed as a defender in AW?

    I don't think so, there will be a green border around the upgraded champion though

    Nope it doesn't change.

    The moment you place your champs in defence, the game "screenshots" the champ and it will stay that way until it is released from AW.

    How about if you placed an unawakened champ in defence then before attack started you awakened that champ and used it in a quest.
    The defence version would be unawakened but the quest version would be awakened?

    Once placed, the defender is locked in whatever state they were in at the time of joining the placement screen. This includes rank, level, mastery setup, and sig level.

    If the champ is upgraded after placement, those changes will take effect immediately in every other aspect of the game (quests, dungeons, arena, etc), but will not update the version placed in war defense.

    If a champ is being used for AW attack, the updates will take effect immediately.
