Gold farming

I know this has been mentioned before, but I haven't seen any explanation for it: Almost everyone says that the arena is the best way to farm gold. I try this and get 20 or 30 gold per fight! An extra 100 gold for winning the battle. That's pennies! I get 200-300 per fight in story and it doesn't charge me gold to play. I'm trying to figure out how playing the arena turns out to be profitable. Do you have to get to insanely high levels and play for hours without losing? I don't get it! Even with the milestones, it doesn't seem to add up.

    You gotta play for a good bit. Also, halls of fortune are coming on the 10th, so you will be able to get around 350k gold for about 250 energy I think (not sure about energy).

    @Taiga battlechips. Turn them in for arena crystals, they have larger amounts in them along with units at times and a rare chance at punisher.
