Good and Bad Deals?

How does one tell from a good or a bad deal costing units? I ended up buying an 800 unit 1500 4* shard and 750 5* shard deal because people had said that deals similar to that were decent; was this a good purchase? (Bonus Question: Why are unit rewards from arena crystals boosted?)
