Am I playing it wrong or is MODOK boss in eq not deactivating his force field?

The text says it can only be removed by a heavy or an unlockable attack. Tried several heavies. Didn't remove the force field.

It doesn't disable if your heavy attack knocks him down before your parry expires

For the EQ, only heavy attack and unblockable attacks can temporarily remove the force field like your regular attacks would on a normal modok. It doesnt mean the force field is down for the rest of the fight after that.

Hyperion is probably the best for it

Just parry + heavy until you get Sp1. Then parry + Sp1. It takes a while, but it works. Pretty much any champ will work and you can win by committee if necessary.
