AW non portal to portal map after placement

Just seeing if it’s a bug,if I’m missing something, or I’m just an idiot. This current war 4/25/2019: When I placed my defenders it was the map without portals, but when the attack phase started it’s a portal map. The customer support has been as useful as ever, ie. assuming I’m a complete noob, or an idiot(possible since I’ve only really done 3 seasons of wars).
