Changes to Awakening Gems

Awakening Gems are one of the most sought after items in the game, particularly 4* and 5* gems. And they are super super rare. The rarity is matched by the utility of these objects. Some game-changing champions absolutely must be awakened to be good, so it makes sense that they are sought after.
The one big downside to them is, if you use one on a champion, and then later duplicate that same champion, your awesome extremely valuable item immediately has its value retroactively changed to that of a +1 signature stone.. which is of course terrible. Very few things in this game are more frustrating than using a 4* or 5* awakening game on a champion and then duping them soon after.
I suggest changing awakening gems to work exactly the same as if you dupe a champion. In other words, if you use a 4* awakening gem on an unawakened champion, instead of getting a single signature level, awakening them, and getting nothing else... awaken that champion, get 20 signature levels, plus all the gold and ISO you would get from duping the same champion.
Then, later, if you dupe the same champion, you don't have to feel like you completely wasted something that was so difficult to obtain.
I don't see why not... awakening gems are so extremely rare it's not like players would suddenly be flooded with resources. It would just be a good change.
One caveat: keep the basic arena the same as it is now. If you get a champion in Basic Arena that you already have in your inventory, it awakens them and you get one dupe level, nothing else. It's still frustrating if you then go on to duplicate the same champion soon thereafter... but... you also get 5* shards from Basic Arena, so it's not a total loss, AND... Basic Arena really SHOULD be for players who are relatively new and still building up their roster. Not for people looking for ISO and dupe levels. So it should stay the same. Just change the gems.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but most people using awakening gems are using them on champs they won't have a chance at duplicating in the near future...
For example, if you were lucky enough to get Doc Octopus today from that 5-crystal deal, and you used a gem on him, getting him again through conventional ways like the PHC or 4* Crystal won't be available for months. So using an awakening gem on him today might be worth it....
Or, prior to 12.0 update, you had Black Widow like I did but a year went by and you never duped her, using a gem on her would have been worth it, and is still worth it post 12.0 in some cases.
The point is the awakening gem is to awaken the champ, the goal after that is to raise there abilities and the means to do so can earned or purchased in game.
what are you talking about? I'm not arguing that duplicating a champion is a bad thing, I'm saying that when it happens it immediately renders useless the extremely rare and costly item you just used (the awakening gem). If the gem gave you everything that duping a champion did, then there would be no problem.
