MCOC is my hobby...as in, it's what I do when I'm not doing anything else because I usually find it fun. This means I also tend to spend more time (and sometimes money) on it than I should, but that's what hobbies get from you. What makes me an average joe is that I'm an average player. Said average player was fortunate enough to find a good crew, and then a good alliance, which makes all the difference. Those will bring you better rewards, which turns into a better roster.
As for units, there are plenty of ways to gain free units:
    1) Do a single run through for each level of the monthly quest. They always give some units. Bonus if you're a Marvel Insider, as they sometimes give bonus points when you do up through heroic.
    2) Play multiple arenas for milestones. Even the 1-2* one. Takes a few minutes over three days and you get units.
    3) Cash in those battlechips, which means hitting milestones.
There's some luck in there too. Just opened a PHC and got Nightcrawler today, and a 4* crystal that gave me Archangel (almost stopped one early...on Deadpool XForce). Before that, I think I got dupes for Iron Fist, Gamora (maxed her out and still only use her in arena), and several other relatively useless dupes/champs.

As for those who've complained about not getting a variety of champs, we're people. Once we get a team we like, we stick with it, especially when we have an assigned path. There is very little that would change my AQ team of X-23, Guillotine, and (currently my best science) OG Cap. I know what I fight and what I have. I always know who 4/5 of my war D is (Mordo, Quake, AV, red Mags), and the only change I'm facing now is war O because there's not going to be a thorns path after this week (God be praised!). My real issue is deciding who to quest with, haha. That's where I play around with new champs.
So take it from an average guy who's lucked into 95% of his good champs but fought through the arenas for the other 5%, it's all in an average day's work.

    Hi average joe,

Take it as good advice from another average joe, who is learning this the hard way and only trying to make it easy for you.

In the end, it wont matter which players you have, what masteries you use, UNLESS you learn NOT to get hit. Its all that matters. Everythin else will come automatically. That Luke Cage wont hold you down if you dont get hit.
