Invincible champ in war

This is not the first time this has happened. I got up against a 1-3* champ with very low pi (under1,000) in today's case 317 pi 1* hulk in war. I attacked with a 5* rocket pi 3.5k+. I landed 70 successful hits causing 0% damage in total. My rocket had 90% hp when the matched timed out. When I went back in to attack rockets HP was below 20%. How is this possible?

    I don't read much of anything. My eyes can't read the small print in the game.

    I can see pics of champs for synergies but I don't know what the synergies entail
