Why exactly does MCoC need the Facebook SDK?

I don't have Facebook installed on my phone. I don't believe it's a valid login option for MCoC, right? So why exactly did we all suffer from the crashing buy yesterday tied to the Facebook SDK? Is it Gamecenter, because that needs to be killed anyway, it causes so much of the login issues.
