Defender Diversity: Clarification needed. (How are we supposed to play if we don't know the rules?)

I just came from a war where the defender diversity was 110 to 113. By my calculations there are currently 106 champs in the game including Medusa.
110 or 113 diversity doesn't seem possible unless the diversity is by battlegroup.
In a 3 BG war what SHOULD the maximum number for defender diversity. 150 (50 each BG) or total number of champs in the game.
