In epic difficulty, if you take the gold path and just reach the gold crystal tile, then that gold crystal is automatically added to your inventory. So you can open it before finished the quest hence allowing you to leave and regain the key.

Before finishing the quest i went to crystals and opened the uc gold crystals. So when I defeated the boss I only got the t4b. If I wanted to I couldve exited that quest without the t4b and gotten the crystals. It might work for the t4b or the t2a fragments too.
