Hulkbuster to rank 5 or wait? (Check description)

I got a tech rank 5 gem from a Variant (God knows which one), and I've been going back and forth on taking up my HB. I've got Ghost and g99 at rank 5, and was going for the featured 5* crystals to get guardian as I've got the gems to rank 5 and awaken him as well. No guardian yet, and I've got almost 200 tier 5 tech iso about to start expiring.

My hulkbuster is unduped, and I've got 3 tech awakening gems. In addition, my plan was to dupe him first from the featureds before rankup as a second choice; but iso expiry waiteth for no man!
Next content in mind is variant 2.

I’ve got a r4 too, not found a reason to take him up yet. He gets the small amount of stuff I use him for done at that rank. His heavy whiff is unreliable enough that it stops me using him more frequently 🤷🏽‍♂️

I think if that got fixed I’d take him up but as it stands I never really plan to use him more than one fight per quest.

Yeah, that heavy whiffing makes me feel weary for sure 😂

The champions that are better than him in the tech class cannot do Variant 2 besides Warlock. I would say wait on the gem because he is still great without it, and there are champs that are better who need that tech gem
