AW Defender Diversity

We just lost our recent AW in part of having to place a weaker defence to ensure diversity. We placed all but 3 unique champions in the game across all 3 bgs. Somehow game only reported 120 unique defenders, while our opponents somehow posted 148.
Very frustrating after the effort involved to coordinate placements. Actively right now - is it counting per BG or across all 3 groups?
Also, flip-flopping on this decision (diversity across all bgs to individual bgs back to across all bgs) resulted in a lot of very bad rankups in our alliance that could have been used MUCH more effectively. Very frustrated.
