Dragon Man taking glance damage in Variant 2?

I'm new to variants and maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like my Dragon Man is taking damage with every hit he does to the defender. I tried other XL champs and none are going down the way Dragon Man was.
Has anyone else seen this? BTW, I'll include a recording if someone can tell how to do that on Android Pixel 3
