How does 6* Abyss Nexus Selector work?

If I explore abyss and choose mutant for my 6* class nexus selector and hold it until Apocalypse is in the basic pool - do I have a shot at getting him or is it predetermined when I complete abyss and choose mutant as the class?
I know that there have been theories floating around but wondering if anyone has any proof?
