Does 6 Star Gambit need to be Awakened?

I’m planning on bringing my Rank 1 UNDUPED 6 star Gambit to Rank 2 and even Rank 3. Is he worth the rank up without the dupe? I also have 5 star Apocalypse at R5. So he is Horseman ready. Thanks in advance!
