First of all, are you talking about awakening gem or 5* crystal?
If taking about AG, then for sure consuming skill/mutant AG first before using generic.

I mean, if you have enough shards to try and dupe them, why use generic?
Go for Mutant and Skill, it also promises much more than the other crystals.
(Better chances at pulling at least someone 'Decent').
