It was always a bad idea to sell champs. Here are a few reasons:
1. Rarity-specific content, such as variants requiring specific star-level champs, or arenas that revolve around EQ 2. Arenas in general, more champs you have to cycle through, the more points you potentially can earn 3. Once max signature level has been acquired, you get bonus shards when you pull that champ again (not to mention the iso for it) 4. Even if a champ is bad or "meme-tier", odds are they will get a future buff or rework to be a better suited for meta
Years ago before they did the tiered-stages of the daily crystal, i used to sell the free 1* from those, but looking back I wish I hadn't, because now there are a few 1* champs that are next to impossible to acquire.
Trickle down economics. More champs. More dupes. More trickle down of lower rarity crystals that lead to more increased chances at higher rarity champs.
