Mordo's special attacks being interrupted

Twice in the past day I've encountered Mordo's special attacks being interrupted by AI in arena. Both times I was against the wall, being attacked, when I pressed the L2 to counter attack. Instead of firing the L2, Mordo was immediately struck by the AI which continued into a combo, yet Mordo's power gauge was drained like an L2 had been used.
