Stuck in a bit of a rut

I've been playing MCOC for a few years, and recently I've been sort of stuck at a point in the game. I have a handful of 5* champions, none of them past rank 2, and I can't get past 5.1.2. I'm at level 45. My main issue is that I don't seem to be progressing anymore, and most ways of getting catalysts that doesn't involve spending money are slow and mostly fruitless. Does anyone have any advice on what do do or what to focus my resources on to progress faster? Any and all help is welcome.

Let me explain to you in a very simple way, If you are free to play you need to invest %60-70 of your time in the arena. You get the units from there and you can explore many quests with or without revives with those units. While playing arena, you also do the daily challenges with the arena as well, (hero use and arena wins). I am sorry but you cannot progress without arena if you are F2P. This is a fact in mcoc.

You don't need arena. Being in an Alliance doing Alliance Quests on a regular basis will get you the rank up materials you need.
Also does waste mats on crappy champions as you won't have enough to go around. Only a handful of 4 stars are worthing ranking up and not many 5 stars either.

Sharpen your skills by doing act 4 exploration

Been playing a few years and only Lvl 45? Gotta do more than just turn on the game and stare at the screen to progress. You know where to start, you just dont wanna put in the work....IMO though

As said before being in an alliance earning glory and map rewards will help you progress. If that is intimidating you can join an alliance that runs lower maps to get your feet wet and earn some rank up materials while you learn from others. There is a lot of room for mistakes in the lower AQ maps that take a lot of the pressure out of the equation. You can take that and move on to higher maps for better rewards increasing your progression even more.
