Cutoff Date to Join Alliance and Still Participate in Gifting

Since war rewards are most likely going to drop on Monday or Tuesday, some people might be looking for a new war alliance to join but the problem is they can't participate in gifting if you have to join the alliance 14 days or more before gifting starts. So can you only contribute to gifting if you join by Dec 6 or can you join later and contribute points after the 14 days are up (ex. you join on Dec 9th and you can start contributing points on Dec 23) ?
