Yeah, as Ebony said, you have to be at a certain level in order to hold all of the necessary materials in your inventory. Below that level, some of them end up in the overflow and you can't use them.

I would recommend you go for another champion, though. Not only is OG Spider-Man not a very good champion (especially not as a first 6* rank-up), you'd do well to rank up a 5* version anyway. Keep in mind that a 5* at rank 5 and a 6* at rank 2 are practically identical in terms of damage, health etc. There is no real reason to rank up 6*s ahead of 5*s before you reach Act 7 and start getting a steady flow of the materials required to take a 6* to rank 3 (which is probably way off). In addition to that, the resources to dupe/awaken and level up a champion's signature ability are much more common for 5*s than they are for 6*s. I have a ton of champions whose sig are extremely necessary for me to use them properly, that I've had for years, that I just never use and have never even ranked up, simply because I can't seem to get that ability awakened.

Don't be afraid to rank up 5*s even if you have 6*s. They are much cheaper to rank up and will serve you just as well if not better in the content you are most likely playing at the moment. I personally didn't rank up any of my 6*s for quite a while. It was basically only when I needed to rank one up in order to become Thronebreaker that I finally did. Before I did, I had over two dozen max-rank 5* champions. They absolutely smashed everything up until Act 7.

If he likes Spidey then he has a valid reason for ranking him. The game is supposed to be fun. Even if most people think Spidey is bad rank the champ you like

This is one of the problems with Kabam pushing players to progress so quickly without adequately explaining and encouraging equal progress/advancement in other aspects of the game. They get high rarity champs and rank materials but haven't bothered to actually level themselves up so they can hold the necessary quantity of catalysts to rank their champs. Kabam needs to do a better job of conveying the importance of leveling as so many people are missing out on the extra energy and mastery points as well as the catalyst limits.
