Help with valor

So do I need to be in an alliance to earn a lot of valor since I wanted a break for a short while or is it just a way to get them faster I never really understood the thread about it.

U can earn from solo missions and arena
Not necessary to be in an ally
Tho if you want extra points from test of valor you'll need to be in one
