Am I doing incursions right?

I'm loving solo incursions, the boosts make it a lot of fun and now that we can do them on our own it's great. But something I don't get is the rewards structure.

I'm currently in Tier 1 and my next zone bonus is Sector 8 Zone 8. That's how far I got on my first run and try as I like I can't make it farther. There's a lot of gold for trying, but what I want are Incursion Artifacts, and if I'm understanding things right, it seems like I got all I'm going to get. If I only get the shards and artifacts for reaching a new zone, and my best champions have extremely long cooldowns, what's the point of doing additional incursions with weaker teams? I feel like I'm just misunderstanding something.

You can also do Sector 9 and 7 for more artifacts too.

Get as far as you can in your three sectors. Other than that, get more artifacts from alliance event that resets every 5 days I think it is.
