What's happening in BG?

What's going on with BG? Game had difficulty loading, opponent selected def, I did too but after I selected attacker the defs changed for both of us, not in my benefit, then for the second round the originally selected defs were placed automatically. Glitch, bug. cheat? No issues with the internet or connection on my end.
