Battlegrounds email rewards expire before event even starts?

We just received the email from Kabam today giving us some rewards and items to use in Battlegrounds. Problem is, there’s no Battlegrounds until January 4. And my items went straight into the overflow stash where they have a whopping 6 days until they retire.
So what’s the deal Kabam? You make something look like charity but then any excess items are just going to expire before we’re even physically able to use them?
It just feels odd. Why give us these rewards *today*? If you’re going to do it why not two weeks from now when it’s actually closer to Battlegrounds coming back?
