Current State of AW for Small Alliances

Quick note about some context: We have a lot of questions in our Ally about the current state of war and the lack of a traditional Enlistment period. Keep in mind I am in a traditionally Silver 2 Alliance where we play one BG as first come first serve. It’s rarely the same ten, as we are not a bunch of serious grinders. We are not getting much participation this season because it feels like it’s always attack phase so our defense numbers have been as low as 4. Makes it hard to win anything at that point.
The best explanation I have is that Kabam has made enlistment automatic so that attack phase can last longer.
This works fine for Alliances that run the same number of BG every war with a consistent group of players each round in each BG. Any variations or movements aren’t easy, and any commitment to an AW season has to be full tilt.
What it feels to me like Kabam have done is to “make it easier” for the most competitive groups that always run the same (usually 3BG) with the same crew each war and a set of defenders where diversity is maximized. That means that each kill is critical; lanes are assigned and there is little to no change for each war.
The higher level alliances play a very sophisticated and organized Alliance War. To that end, they are the ones spending money and resources and this is why they get treated differently.
That also means that if you are free to play (ftp) they care far less about you as a player than they appear to have in the past.
Add AW to the growing list of content that Kabam make more difficult to casually play.
Separate discussion but seems to be an increased number of tasks with special rewards tied to AW activity.
