Champ in war defence - stat focus locked

I just noticed that I can't change the stat focus of a champ I have set as a defender in war.
Given that there's nothing keeping me from using the champion in battlegrounds, shouldn't stat focus settings lock in the same way as masteries, then be able to change them normally for any other game mode?
