I just prevented Nick Fury's second life with Morbius but have no idea how

In battlegrounds I popped an sp2 on Fury that didn't kill so I then needed to pop atleast 2 more sp1's putting the petrify back on and for some reason he just straight died instead of removing all the debuffs and going into second life. How did that even happen I didn't see anything on Morbius's kit that does something like that..?
