Rare 2* Champs - earn in game???

Would love to know if it drives anyone else wild that you can't collect all the 2* Champs without buying 100 unit crystals? There's no way without paying way too much to collect them? That's a lame approach. Especially for those spenders who spend on actual progression in the game. Anyone else want a way to earn them in game, even if it's super grindy?
