In a few days the game will start a 2* champion arena. It will last 7 days and give lots of 5* shards.
Regular methods:
Do arena. If you win the basic arena, you get 300 5* shards. If you only get into the 11-25% bracket, you'll still get 200 5* shards. The featured arena takes more points to win, but it also provides 5* shards. If you just do 350k in the featured arena, the minimum to qualify, you'll still get 100 5* shards. That's a pretty good amount for the effort.
Join an alliance. Help with the summoner advancement event to get weekly 5* shards. The amount depends on how many you get.
Log in every day. Sometimes there is a special login calendar that gives 5* shards.
Th one thing to know and accept right now is there is no real fast way (unless there is a huge $ or unit offer... but those are usually very expensive like yesterday's offers). So know they will come VERY SLOWLY when you first start playing. You may get none at all for months when first starting.
Though as someone pointed out there is a special event arena coming tomorrow... but if you do not have a decent amount of level 2*s it will be hard to get far in that arena. But you should be able to get a milestone or two (so some 5* shards) regardless.
