Basically you just need to practice getting the timing down. You want to block just before the opponent's attack hits you. What I did to improve was to use the 2 and 3* arenas to practice. You can also search on youtube for videos like those of Dorky diggity Dave's that walk you through the techniques. But ultimately it's a skill you have to practice to achieve.
