Connecting existing account to (Google) Play Games

I recently changed the email address associated with my Kabam ID to a brand new gmail address that I created a couple days ago. The support team changed it almost instantly and I had no issues with that.
A small issue came up when I wanted to connect the new email address with Play Games. When deleting progress and the entire Play Games account associated with my old email address, and then trying to link my new email with my account, I was prompted with a Play Games account creation. When I did all that (via in-game buttons), the "Account already linked" pop-up showed up. So, I pressed Log in, and instead of linking my account, it just created a completely new account for me with the beginners tutorial and all.
Now when I try to log in via Play Games with the new email address, I'm stuck on the loading screen forever and nothing happens.
I can safely log in to my old MCOC account with Kabam ID, so I didn't lose any access, I just wanted to connect the new email address to Play Games too so that I have everything in one place.
Submitting a ticket to Kabam seems pointless since it's a Google thing so I'll ask here in case someone has a solution/advice. Is it a lost cause? Will my old email be always associated with my main MCOC account through Play Games even though I deleted the account and its progress?
