Because in a sense it is a premium currency/item. You can play bgs normally with energy but you get minimal points in events etc. Or you can use elder marks for maximum. But it'll cost you.

Imagine the scenario where you can buy elder marks using trophy tokens. You can use marks to earn tokens, buy more marks to play matches and get more EM’s and tokens which you can use to play more matches and buy more EM’s. It will be an endless cycle of point farming.

I agree with the way it is honestly BUT I do not agree with there being a cap on elders marks. I didn’t know there was a 9000 cap on elders marks and I hit the cap, didn’t get a message and had been claiming the elders marks from the BGs milestones
