Gold rewards in event quests?

I'm seeing a lot of inconsistency in gold payoffs for battles in the event quests. Many fights paying under 100 gold, and in the same quest others paying a couple hundred. Both normal and heroic levels. Has this been the case all along and I just noticed, or is there something buggy affecting it?
Usually I just tap the screen so fast I don't notice, so it's possible this has been the reality all along?
